Pirelli SP-V4: A Street Motorcycle Tire with a Racing Heritage

Racing has long been the preferred proving ground for Pirelli, and the company believes in giving its street riders the same blend of design, technology and quality that go into its racing tires. The DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 tire is a street-legal, track-worthy tire with more than two decades of history and development behind it. The first Pirelli DIABLO Supercorsa tire debuted in 2007, and this latest iteration is the fourth generation of that original offering.

The “SP” in DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 stands for “Sport Production” to differentiate it from its track-use counterpart, the SC. The SP version of the DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 tire offers a faster warm-up time and higher mileage capabilities than the SC. Its characteristics combine to make it a great tire choice for both street riding and track day use. In fact, a rider can easily travel to the track, participate in a track day, then ride home, without ever needing to change the tires. Pirelli has been the sole tire supplier to the FIM World Superbike Championship since 2004, and the enormous amount of knowledge gained from that series has been poured into this latest version of the DIABLO Supercorsa tire. As Pirelli’s motto so clearly states, “We sell what we race, and we race what we sell.” The DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 offers street riders outstanding performance, high levels of grip and many of the same features as its racing counterpart, including the tread pattern and profiles. The shoulder area of the DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 is slick, so it provides increased contact patch and grip when at full lean through the corners. The pattern is also designed for improved water displacement and reduced warm-up time, giving it the right blend of track performance and street reliability.

There is a distinct similarity between the DIABLO Superbike slick tire and the DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 tire. The multiradius profile helps smooth out abrupt direction changes, and riders enjoy improved feedback and handling. The DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 tire features a dual-compound design on both the front and rear, further improving grip in the corners and while accelerating out of them. The base compound on the front tire is rich in silica for consistency in all temperatures, and the base compound for the rear tire has a 100% carbon black formulation. The shoulder-area compound on both the front and rear is the same as that used by the racing version of the Supercorsa tire, including a 100% carbon black formulation to ensure outstanding handling and grip at lean. Pirelli fine-tuned the structure for each available size of the DIABLO Supercorsa SP-V4 tire. By taking that extra step, each size has been optimized for performance. The proportions of the compound and the arrangement of the tread pattern are among the details that were customized.
